SUMMARY:Child Abuse Prevention Month
DESCRIPTION:The month of April is a chance to raise awareness of the importance of the legal representation WLS provides\, through generous community support\, to abused and neglected children in the custody of social services. In 2020\, the Child Advocacy Unit represented more than 1\,500 children who were removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect and are in the custody of foster care services in Washoe County\, Lyon County\, Storey County\, Pershing County\, Humboldt County and Carson. These numbers do not include minor guardianship\, aged-out youth or adoptions.  \nWashoe Legal Services will be planting pinwheels at the office on Arlington April 2\, 2021! Donate to the cause online and plant your own Pinwheel Garden in show of solidarity at your home\, office\, church\, school\, or organization. For more information or materials contact Communication Manager\, Amanda Brock. ​

SUMMARY:May is Older Americans Month
DESCRIPTION:When Older Americans Month was established in 1963\, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. About a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens led to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month\,” the prelude to “Older Americans Month.” Historically\, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country\, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since Kennedy has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies\, events\, fairs\, and other such activities. \nPeople over 75 years old visit the doctor 3 times more often than people 22 to 44 years old. Medical Legal Partnership addresses the social determinants of health that creates hardships for vulnerable populations through the integration of free legal services in the healthcare setting.  Healthcare staff is trained to screen and triage potential legal issues that have a negative impact on health.
